Announcements – useful or annoying?

On all public transport systems we are generally bombarded by verbal announcements, many pre-recorded.  Some are useful – “the next train from platform 6 is the …” but most are just noise – don’t run when its wet, keep your belongings with you, etc.

It is similar to how our visual field is assailed by signs and information.  Again we have to look for those that are useful to us against the sea of warnings, advice and instructions.

But perhaps the tide is turning and the needs of the passenger are starting to make headway against the transport operators who are presumably following general practice and are trying to avoid potential litigation.  Transport Minister, Norman Baker, yesterday made some statements against the current volume of announcements –

After all, we need the information provision in our transport systems to help us find our way and use the services and not get lost amongst the noise.
