CCD appointed by Etihad Airways
Specialist design consultancy CCD to create control rooms for Abu Dhabi’s new Midfield Terminal.
CCD Design and Ergonomics has been appointed to design and create four new control rooms at the new Midfield Terminal at Abu Dhabi International Airport. The new terminal will increase the airport’s passenger capacity to more than 30 million per year, and will become the main base for all Etihad operations when it is completed in 2019.
CCD, who are one of the world’s leading control room specialists, were appointed by Etihad Aviation Group after a competitive tender and rigorous selection process. The consultancy will work alongside Etihad’s own team who have already established a temporary Hub Control Room, and have been using it to test the impact of different layouts on operational efficiency.
David Watts, CCD’s Managing Director says, “We will be designing four control rooms for Etihad – a joint control room for the network and hub operations, a terminal control room, a baggage control room and a ramp operations control room. Together they ensure the smooth delivery of passenger-side operations, ensuring passengers make connections and stay synchronised with their luggage. Etihad has already seen in their existing control rooms how the impact of small changes in layout can improve operational efficiency and they want to replicate that success in these new rooms.”
CCD is responsible for a full set of design services from feasibility, requirements capture, concept design, detailed design, tender support and construction supervision and in addition will be responsible for the furniture design, room layout and interior design. The consultancy will collaborate with Hoare Lea on MEP services, Faithful + Gould on cost consultancy and Sutton Vane Associates on lighting design.
CCD has designed more than three hundred control rooms across the globe in the last four decades. Recent projects include terminal control room for Heathrow T2, consolidated baggage control for Heathrow, operations room for Easyjet, STAR centre at Heathrow and En Route ATC centre for NATS.
