What we did
We provided SSL with ergonomics support for the development and testing of their prototype TM system. The project involved a high level of cooperation and collaboration between the three suppliers with an integrated Ergonomics Working Group lead by the Network Rail Ergonomics Team and including ergonomics experts from the suppliers. We were responsible for supporting NR in developing the operational concept, a detailed predictive task analysis and developing the prototype evaluation and test process. Directly for SSL, we were responsible for the supplier Human Factors Integration Plan, TM workstation layout and design, design and layout of a model office (prototype control facility for testing), system interface and equipment compliance testing, support to prototype testing and management of ergonomics issues.
We continued to support SSL in a study aimed at understanding the needs and requirements for a 1st deployment of TM at Derby ROC (formerly EMCC), including potential layouts for TM workstations within an existing operational centre, integration of signalling and control roles and migration issues.
We were then invited onto a future deployments study, as a group of experts from all integrated disciplines across the Traffic Management Programme to review issues raised during the prototype and first deployment phases. This resulted in a number of technical work streams, problem solving and reports addressing proposed ways forward to accelerate the progress of the traffic management programme.
